How to join two video files
This is a simple howto explaining how to merge two (or more) avi into one. First get the necessary software. Open terminal (alt+f2 thentype gnome-terminal) and type:  sudo apt-get install mencoder Next navigate to the folder where your video is located (for simplicity keep all of the files you want to merge in the same folder) and type: mencoder -ovc copy -oac copy video1.avi video2.avi -o...

Copy files from a text file to directory
My brother brought me an NTFS formatted drive to copy some… files… for him. The only non-server I have is running OS X, so had to mount the portable drive on my headless server. I thought I was in a world of sadness copying files one-by-one but I discovered some magic with xargs. Essentially, I chuck a newline separated list of files (full path) into a file in /tmp/files_to_copy ...

A Taliban (or is it Jewish?) Joke
A fleeing Taliban, desperate for water, was plodding through the Afghan desert when he saw something far off in the distance. Hoping to find water, he hurried toward the oasis, only to find a little old Jewish man at a small stand, selling ties. The Taliban asked, “Do you have water?” The Jewish man replied, “I have no water. Would you like to buy a tie? They are only...

Friends, let's talk food
As most of you know, I like food. I like cooking and I like trying new food. I try to avoid the same foods and to avoid food boredom, will often buy an ingredient or two, then go looking for something to cook with it. While I was getting dinner ready for tonight, I had a thought. Are our seemingly endless choices of ‘convenience’ food so great that we’re sacrificing good food...

Comparing directory contents
Recently I had a hard drive fail on me, so spent quite a bit of time recovering the data to put onto a new drive. During this process, I also decided to retire my Windows Server 2008 box in favour of an Ubuntu Server 11.04. Doing so meant that it was time to ditch my NTFS drives and replace them with ext4. To make sure that I don’t lose any data (failed copy, missed directory etc), before...

Disable the accented character picker
Open up your terminal Enter the following command: defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool false Restart your computer. Bummer, I know. The press-and-hold functionality is immediately disabled, but you can’t hold down a key until you fully reboot.

Fifi and the Marine
The train was quite crowded, and a U. S. Marine walked the entire length looking for a seat, but the only seat left was taken by a well-dressed, middle-aged, French woman’s poodle. The war-weary Marine asked, ‘Ma’am, may I have that seat?’ The French woman just sniffed and said to no one in particular, ‘Americans are so rude. My little Fifi is using that...

Cisco rommon musings
I am by no means a networking person, so this may seem noobish to those of you in the know. I attempted to upgrade the IOS on my 1761 last week, only to discover I grabbed the wrong version, which I had insufficient flash for. So when I get home, it’s sitting there in rommon. No worries, I thought, I’ve been here before, I’ll just restore the old version and be on my way. ...

Automagical Plex To Miso poster
I’ve been using Miso for quite some time now for checking into media as I watch it - be it weekly eps, old movies or even at the cinema. About a month ago, I purchased a Mac mini and have been running the Plex Media Centre app on it and it has been fantastic, however, there is always the manual element of checking into Miso (using either the web interface, or the iPhone app.) I figured...

Plex Media Centre
By default, it will scan your entire library every hour. If your library is rather large and you’ve just installed Plex Media Centre, it will want to scan your entire library. Then scan it again, and even a little bit more… every hour (and for some reason, it’s not smart enough to detect that a previous scan is already running.) My advice? Disable hourly scanning until your...

Back to work
After two weeks of rest, it’s time to get back to work. Not entirely sure how I feel about this. One one hand, I’m going back to work… on the other hand, I won’t be spending so much money on stuff. I guess it all evens out. I haven’t blogged for quite some time, so what’s been going on? Things have settled down with the house quite well, I’ve stopped the...

Ergh
I can’t get a tiler until the week commencing 27th of September and the floorboards can’t go in till after then. I’m so damn close and yet still have about a month to go before I’ll actually get to move in - so frustrating. At least I can get in and out whenever I want now :D Now, this isn’t too far away, however, my sister and her family are coming to visit for two...

Finally!
The house I have been waiting for what seems like years is finally ready to go. Whilst Westpac gets their inspection done, I have to wait what will seem like the longest week ever for my handover meeting with Fairmont this Friday. Once I have the keys, however, there’s more work to do. I’ve got the concreter coming out to check what they need to do, as well as blind measurements from...

Practical Completion
After a long, long year and a half, my house is finally at practical completion! There are still a few things left to do (electrician finalising lights, fly screens to go in) but the house is now ready to go. I have my walkthrough inspection booked for tomorrow at 11am. I have a small list of things to run through with my supervisor but nothing major and nothing (hopefully) that can’t be...

Almost there, I think (hope)
Given that the house was meant to be finished on the 6th of this month, I wasn’t surprised when the supervisor said they’ll miss the 27th by a few days. The painter is finishing up the eaves and whatever else needs to be finished outside today and the detailer and cleaners should follow in short order. All going well, I should have my site inspection late next week sometime. Fingers...

Red Shirt Day
If the red shirt thing is new to you, read below how it went for one Man… Last week, while traveling to Brisbane on business, I noticed an army Sergeant traveling with a folded flag, but did not put two and two together.  After we boarded our flight, I turned to the sergeant, who’d been invited to sit in Business Class (across from me), and inquired if he was heading home. ...

Delays!
Who saw it coming? I know I did. Fairmont must have but they waited till the day before the original practical completion date to actually send me a letter saying that it would be pushed back. As far as I can tell, everything is now pretty much done and all that is left is painting, air conditioning and cleanup. Speaking with the painter, it’ll be two weeks before he’s done....
